Bloodborne Pathogens Reason for Learning OSHA estimates that 8 million workers in the healthcare industry and related occupations are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, (OPIM), puts you at risk for serious illness or death. The viruses of main concern are the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV).
